One of my favorite books, and my favorite book of Ms. Lackey. I've been a fan of Ms. Lackey for awhile now, and I wish more of her books were as good as her earlier works such as this. Nothing in the tale feels forced or rushed, the characters are well developed, and there are plenty of twists and turns that keep a reader invested in the story to see if their guess as to what happens next is right or not. The Skull Hill Ghost is by far my favorite character and I wish he had more of a showing in this book. Luckily he makes appearances in the next two entries in this trilogy. The world in Bardic Voices is a far cry from Valdemar, and the her treatment of organized religion and the church is a bit harsher than in the Heraldic novels. It's not done in a bad way, however, but it will give you some pause to think about how the line between church and state is never as clear and well drawn as it is supposed to be. Some readers may find an issue with the romance that develops between the Lark and the Wren due to the significant age gap, but when put into context of the medieval setting and shorter lifespans of that time frame, it certainly makes sense. And as with almost every Mercedes Lackey novel, this one also delivers that little something that makes the reader wish for an adventure of their own.

The Lark And The Wren Bardic Voices Book 1 Mercedes Lackey Darrell K Sweet 9781555940003 Books Reviews

Mercedes Lackeys is a fantastic fantasy writer and the Bardic series is a great read, just don't start it before bed...
This is such an amazing book and is by far my favorite one by Mercedes Lackey. I have read it a dozen times over the last twenty years. The characters are extremely well-written and the story is original and compelling. Rune is such a strong heroine, you cannot help but root for her as her epic and heart-wrenching story unfolds. I will always have a special place in my heart for this fantastic tale.
I like Mercedes Lackey's writing a lot. It continually amazes me that she can appear to put three stories (three settings for the main character's development) together without the seams showing. As often happens with , (Someone please look into this.) there were some misspelled words and incorrect substitutions, but not enough to slow me down too much. I am looking forward to more Bardic Voices.
... because I have read this book before and knew I liked it. I love the whole Bardic Voices series. Eight years after I read them the first time I found myself wanting to re-read them (not something I do often) Not to post a spoiler but the gist is a young girl who dreams of changing her situation, and the crazy tale of how she winds up doing so. If you are not sure you want to spend money on it, get book 1 from a library and you'll know from that if you want to own it, or read the others. You can also save some money and buy the trilogy all together The Free Bards (Bardic Voices) But there is another book that is not necessary, but goes in between the second and third book A Cast of Corbies (Bardic Choices)
I first read this in high school and have only now gotten around to buying them for my personal library. Wren is a tenacious dreamer that learns to ground her dreams in reality only after taking some hard hits, LITERALLY. Along the way she finds friends in some unlikely places, friends who are more powerful than their mutual enemies if only they will realize it. I love the ghost on the hill who appears in the other books as well. One might say this book is about growing up and taking control of one's life, daring to dream against the odds and finding purpose and love.
Fell in love with the characters, well not the evil ones, and was sad to see the end. No part of the tale drug, making reading a chore until the thread became enjoyable again.
The Lark and the Wren is one of my favorite talres from Mercedes Lackey. I just finished reading it for the umpteenth time. In many ways the setting is similar to Valdemar, but with no Heralds or Companions or Collegia. Instead the story celebrates the magic of music, both metaphorically and literally.

Rune starts out as a talented amateur musician in a bleak situation. in a medieval culture. Of course she escapes and sets out on a quest to become a musical star. She has no idea of the hurdles she will have to overcome. Her adventures make for entertaining reading.

Eventually she finds that being a star is not as glamorous as she thought, but that there is an alternative path to follow. She meets a teacher with a secret, some elves, some Gypsies, and other people who are different from her but who share her love for music. Her life remains adventurous and entertaining.

I took one star off because of careless translation from paper to electronic form. Dashes were used in place of more appropriate punctuation in many, many places. That made for sections that were confusing to follow. I hope that an editor will fix that glitch in future editions, as well as delineating change-of-scene dividers.

Enjoy!
