I was looking for a book along the lines of Rendezvous with Rama, and decided to try some of the Haikasoru line since I'd heard the style of some of their novels hearkens back to older sf. Whoever said that was right, in both good and bad ways.

Bad: The characterization was a bit thin. The reading could get a bit dry.

Good: The reading was a bit dry because the author used Science! and Engineering! and discussed Ideas!

Seriously, I get happy when there's one brilliant idea in a sf novel. This book was full of them. I feel that it truly reflected what the nature of an encounter with aliens would be like. It opened my mind up to difficulties and ideas I'd not even considered, which I'm still pondering off and on thoughout the day. And best yet, that encounter was a reflection of humanity more than anything, of us at our best and worst.

I do recommend this novel, bearing in mind that it is hard sf. It does get easier to read about a quarter of the way in though, and I found the concepts within made the dry parts (which are skimmable after all) more than worth it.

Harkening back to Isaac Asimov stories. This is a brilliant if a little disjointed story along the lines of 2001, Rama and 3001. All scifi masterpieces. It's short but the theories and brilliance in the book is mind bending. A must read for hardcore science lovers
great way of proposing a different form of travelling of this outsiders. same goes for the structure this aliens form, as a colony.
Ever read a book where the first 50-100 pages were slow before it got better? This novel does just the opposite- starts very good and draws the reader in- then slows down with a lot of tech speak that dulls the narrative for about the next third of the story. The last third picks up but the build up to meeting the aliens is better than the actual meeting. The nature of the aliens is a unique one but not very sympathetic one. One tends to think that blasting them might actually be beneficial to both sides. Why four stars then? The book is a quick read and the premise is a different one than usually found in sf. The tower on Mercury and the subsequent ring thats built blocks a lot of sunlight from reaching earth, and the ecological impact this has caused makes the most fascinating parts to read. The main character is Aki Shiraishi and her story begins when she is around seventeen and discovers the tower through a telescope. Her story continues as she enlists with the UN/Japan space force and is the one that first discovers the true nature of the tower. By the time of first contact she is now in her early fifties and has spent her life dealing with all the fallout from what her discoveries have done to earth and its societies. And yes, she does solve everything in the end but at least she survives the ending of the book. This book would make a good movie.
I appreciated the unique perspective of a female protagonist, but she seemed under developed as she was over-shadowed by much of the hard-science or need to just move the plot along. There were many thoughtful points brought up, and took an interesting approach to alien encounters.
This novel was a very pleasant read. A restrained, thoughtful, character-focused hard science fiction yarn with a maddening yet tantalizing mystery all throughout - Why won't they talk to us? Do they not hear us? Do they not care? Are they capable of responding? Who are 'they' anyway?

I don't intend to write a novel myself, but I will say the conclusion is at once surprising, eminently plausible, and satisfying. As someone with a background in neuroscience and psychology, I found the revelations about the nature of consciousness and communication that come at the end are spot on and fascinating to see applied in the context of a sci fi story. Recommended both for the tale, and the introspection at the end.
This was recommended along with several other books on Reddit's sci-fi section. I got the edition. Liked it a lot. Plenty of hard-science stuff but not so much as to make the average reader's eyes cross.
The plot is clever, and the first-contact part of the story is very well-imagined with some notion of just how alien aliens might be.
A good read.
Just finished reading this incredible novel called. I give it 5 stars, 10 out of 10, or whatever propels your spaceship.
The best thing I can compare it to in western media that people would recognize would be Carl Sagan's "Contact", though besides being well written, (mostly) scientifically accurate, first-contact stories, they aren't otherwise very similar to each other.
In my personal opinion I liked "Usurper of the Sun" better, though I did read "Contact" last several years ago, but I get similar "feelings" from this book as I remember having from reading "Contact".
